BJJ-Be a Guard Buster

Wednesday, July 27th, 2011

The Best fighters in Maryland know various closed guard breaking techniques, but the Brazilian jiu-jitsu technique that you will be learning from this article is the Low Guard Break. It’s a great guard break from the ground which takes away the risk of being swept or submitted. You also won’t spend a lot of energy standing up and possibly being brought down just to try to stand up again. It is beneficial to learn effective and low energy techniques. You get locked into your opponent’s closed guard. Before you can begin to escape this position and work for the pass you must have your posture. Posture is crucial whenever you are in your opponent’s closed guard. You will get submitted and swept without good posture.

To begin make sure your knees are shoulder width apart and you are sitting straight up. If your knees are too close together it will be very easy for your opponent to just trap your arms and sweep you. You will end up mounted if you let that happen. In competition you will be down 6 points, 2 for the sweep and 4 for the mount, all because of incorrect posture. Also a little detail to note when you are in your opponent’s closed guard try to stay on your toes instead of the top part of your foot. Women Self Defense Classesstudents love this little detail because being on your toes will put you into the ready-to-go position when are able to open up the guard. It also adds a little stress to your opponent’s legs because they are elevated slightly higher than before. Next you want to make sure your elbows are inside their thighs and your hands are grabbing Gi material at their hip. Now you are going to walk your knees backwards and use your back to create stress on your opponent’s ankles. When the guard is open you immediately place one of your knees in the middle to prevent them for relocking the closed guard. You can pass in any way you like when you are in runner stance. This is a great guard break for the Best fighters in Maryland to learn also.

Tips On Defending Your Self From An Attacker

Thursday, May 12th, 2011

Self defense classes in Columbia MD like to teach techniques that will increase a person’s chances of survival in the event of an attack. The classes often teach them how to defend from the standing position, back against the wall position, and when the back is flat against the ground. These are a few of the positions that could occur during a fight. Fights are unpredictable so it is important to know how to defend yourself in every situation. It is important to be ready both mentally and physically to so that when the situation occurs you can react fast which will increase your odds of success.

The fight is usually going to start on the feet so knowing how to immediately defend from the standing position will stop a lot of potentially bad things from happening. Self defense classes in Columbia MD will tell their students to keep their hands up at all times protecting their face. Keeping the hands up in the correct position will allow for better defense and also allow you to mount an offence of your own weather through striking or grappling.

When the back is against the wall or some other object the situation has now escalated to a riskier situation. At this point in the fight it is imperative not to get trapped into the corner of a wall when being attacked. If there are multiple attackers then it’s better to have the back in a corner because no one can hit them from behind. Also if the person is being attacked by multiple attackers while in the corner it limits some of the damage the group can do.

People rarely think about what to do if the fight gets taking to the ground. Most people think that they should just focus on learning boxing and stand up techniques. Although knowing how to box is a good skill to have some self defense classes in Columbia MD teach their students how to protect themselves against ground attacks. Being on the ground is not necessarily a bad position but it could be. there are many ground positions, some good and some bad, so you need to be sure not to get mounted or turn your back to them.

Which is better Traditional Boxing or Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?

Tuesday, May 10th, 2011

Self defense classes in Baltimore MD offer a wide variety of different fighting styles.  However it’s always fun to pit one fighting style against another.   In this case we will be comparing traditional boxing versus Brazilian jiu jitsu.  Traditional boxing is a stand up fighting style that focus on throwing punches toward the opponents face and body.    It also teaches how to dodge and block the opponents upper body attacks which allows you to counter with strikes of your own.    Boxing is a fast fighting style that requires quick feet and hands to work together to beat the opposition.   There are a couple of defenses used against an opponent in traditional boxing.   Self defense classes in Baltimore teach students the slip technique to avoid punches toward the face.  Slips are when the fighter moves their head out of the way of punches.   Muhammad Ali is a good example of someone who is great at slipping and avoiding punches.   Another technique used often to defend punches is the Cover.     Covering is simply holding your arms and hands in front of your face to deflect blows before countering.    Covering is usually used when the opponent throws a flurry of punches rather then a couple that can be easily slipped.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is the polar opposite to boxing because there is no striking.    Brazilian jiu jitsu (BJJ) subdues their opposition by way of chokes and submission that can break their limbs.    Jiu Jitsu practitioners use a combination of Judo and wrestling to take their opponent to the ground where they then wrestle them into good positions and submit them.    Because there is no striking in BJJ, you need to get the opponent to the ground before you can attack.   When the opponent is taken down the ground they can choke via cross choke, loop choke, bread cutter, rear naked choke, triangle choke, the list goes on.  The opponent can also be submitted via arm locks, leg locks, and kneebars that are all capable of breaking the limbs.

In a fight between a traditional boxer and a Brazilian jiu jitsu fighter the winner would be the Brazilian jiu jitsu fighter because the boxer has no training on the ground.    Jiu jitsu fighters can even use submissions off their back in the event that the boxes somehow gets on top.     A boxer needs to get close to punch their opponent and when this happens the jiu jitsu fighter is in range for takedowns.   Most self defense classes in Baltimore combine the two style to provide students with the ultimate form of self defense training.

Getting Fit to Fight

Monday, April 11th, 2011

If someone was ever put into a situation where they had to defend themselves against attackers would they physically be able to?  Students who take self defense classes in Columbia MD know that achieving optimum physical fitness and wellness will greatly benefit them if they ever have to defend themselves.  By exercising regularly they will increase their cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, and flexibility. All of those improvements will play a part in deciding how the fight would end if they were ever attacked.

Cardio and endurance should be the foundation for all workouts and is extremely important for self defense.  Everybody has to breathe and consume oxygen in order to live.  What separates most people from others is the amount of oxygen required for the body to do tasks.   Training your cardiovascular system for long periods of time will greatly increase your lung capacity.  It will also decrease your heart rate and that will regulate the flow of blood and oxygen throughout the body better.  Some self defense classes in Columbia MD would recommend that the student has the endurance to outlast all their opponents in a fight for victory.

Muscular strength is also something that needs to be worked on constantly when achieving optimum physical fitness.  The body doesn’t keep muscle mass as people age so the muscle have to be do constantly worked out to increase or maintain that muscle mass and strength.   Strength is very important in self defense and comes in to play in a lot of different ways. Sometimes you will need it to put power behind strikes other time it will help in grappling situations.

Probably the most neglected part of being at peak physical fitness is usually flexibility, however it is just a essential as the other aspects of physical fitness. One benefit of being flexible is that you will less likely to get injured.  Strikes are most likely to hurt someone who is stiff and solid than someone who is loose and flexible.   Another benefit to being flexible is that it becomes easier to escape bad positions and it makes it easier to use submissions in grappling situations.  More self defense classes in Columbia MD are starting to stress the importance of optimum physical fitness and wellness because techniques alone would always win your battles.
