MMA-Treatment of Musculoskeletal Injuries

Saturday, August 20th, 2011

Women Self Defense Classes students are trained to handle musculoskeletal injuries with RICE. The acronym RICE is the most common method used for describing the acute treatment for musculoskeletal injuries. RICE means Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation The four steps are the accepted first aid standard for the treatment of these types of injuries.

Though swelling is a key protective mechanism and a part of the healing process, it is still important to reduce swelling.   Even though it is difficult to stop swelling when it first starts, when RICE is used secondary swelling can be reduced significantly Secondary swelling slows the healing process and decreases one’s ability to safely participate in activity. Maryland Jujitsu fighters have to sit out until the swelling slow down.

Remember that it may not always be prudent to actually apply treatment to an injury. The more experience you have with healing injuries, the better equiped you’ll be in a injury situation.  Therefore, the guidelines for RICE are included below:

Rest: Take a break from the activity that caused you to get injured.

Ice: Apply ice to the affected area for 20 minutes. There should be some sort of insulating layer between the skin and ice to prevent frostbite.   Never apply ice to an already numb area.

Compresson: Swelling is reduced with the assistance of elastic bandages. The elastic bandage should always reach from the largest muscle below the injury to the largest muscle group above the injury.

Elevation: The force of gravity can reduce swelling. Utilize the first three steps the lift the affected limb as high as comfortable. The injured areas should be raised at least level with or slightly above, the heart. Fighters who get Kickboxing Classes in MD feel a lot better after doing RICE.

Martial Arts- Losing can be a Blessing in Disguise

Friday, August 19th, 2011

BJJ Baltimore instructors know a really good saying, ‘losing is not the end of the world’ however the people who hate losing despise that saying.  Unfortunately for them, martial arts is one of those areas where you can’t have that winning is the only thing that matters type of mindset.   Having that kind of mindset will not allow you to grow and learn from your mistakes.   Let’s say you compete in the martial art Brazilian jiu-jitsu.   This martial art is very competitive because it takes a lot of hard work and dedication just to be good at.   So imagine putting all that hard work and dedication into competing and you end up losing.    It’s completely understandable if you feel upset or even furious; however there is always a silver lining, losing has the opportunity to make you better if you have the right mindset.   Try instilling that mindset in kids of childrens martial arts classes.

When you win it feels amazing because everything that you did to prepare for the fight worked.    A lost has to used as a learning experience or else you’ll miss the opportunity to get better at jiu-jitsu.    Sometimes you learn more from losing than you do winning because when you lose you have to address the reasons why you lost.    You may think that your jiu-jitsu game is solid until you lose but you can easily locate the area you need to fix and fix it.     For example, your gameplan for the match is to pull open guard and play De La Riva because that is the position you’ve worked hard on and you feel comfortable with.   Now it’s your turn to fight, you pull guard and get in your De La Riva position according to plan; however, you weren’t anticipating your opponent being able to grab hold of your leg that was on their hip and them being able to drag it onto one side of their body for the easy guard pass. Your opponent was able to pin you down in side control but was unable to submit, sweep, or gain more points on you.

Even though you lost you should be thankful because now you know what you need to correct. The thing about losing in martial arts is that once you’ve made the mistake you are extremely less likely to make it again.  Also if you end up fighting that same person again one day you’ll know you have improved.  BJJ Baltimore instructor makes sure their students well-rounded enough to play both and bottom.

BJJ- Nervousness at Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Competitions

Thursday, August 18th, 2011

BJJ Baltimore schools deal with students who don’t do competitions because they are afraid of getting nervous.  You are about to do your first Brazilian jiu-jitsu competition and your nerves start to get the best of you.   It’s okay to get nervous at the tournament as long as you cut it off when you step on the mat to fight.   Yes, that is easier said than done, but it can be done.    When you let your nerves completely take over you’ll lose focus on what your gameplan is.  When you can control your nerves not even your competition will be able to make you nervous.

Maryland jujitsu instructors make sure their students are prepared to deal with every occurrence at tournaments.  There are Brazilian jiu-jitsu competitors out there that make it a habit of just being intimidating to win their matches.   Surprisingly that tactic works well against people.   There are different ways that people intimidate their competition.  Some people do the insane man warm-up to intimidate their opponent.    That is when a BJJ fighter is doing a hardcore warm-up to show others how tough they are.   There are the mean mug BJJ fighters who just stare you down like they want to put a rear naked choke on you to snap your neck.   The calm BJJ competitors are the most intimidating because their confidence can make you doubt yourself.

It doesn’t matter what the other person does as a way of intimidation.   What is important is how you prepared and trained for the competition.  You will have no reason to be nervous if you have done what is needed to prepare for your tournament.    Even if you lost the fight you shouldn’t be too upset about it, because now you know what you need to work on to avoid making the same mistake again.  If you have to lose a match it’s better to lose it because of skill instead of nerves.  Maryland BJJ teachers assure their students that it’s easier to improve your BJJ than it is to get over your nerves.

BJJ-Technique to Easily Take the Back

Thursday, August 18th, 2011

BJJ Baltimore instructors love the techniques that you can do from closed guard especially taking the back.  You can take the more direct approach and just fight your hardest for that position or you can use a bit more finesse.   If you want to do the more direct way be aware that your opponent will fight their hardest to prevent it from happening.  That is a lot of energy that will be expended.    If you want to do the easier way you’ll end up outsmarting your opponent into a submission.   The reason why the attack will be easier is because they are defending the first submission attempt that they won’t notice the second submission attempt.

In Brazilian jiu-jitsu you have to use your energy wisely because you don’t know if you can finish your opponent quickly or not.   That’s why this closed guard back take technique is so great to have in your arsenal.

To start off this technique put your opponent in your closed guard.   From there you want to try to break your opponent’s posture by sitting up and pulling them back down or by dragging them down with a lapel grip.   When they are worried about posture they can’t focus on what you plan on doing next.

You now want to take your right hand and grab their right sleeve.   With your left hand you are going to grab the back of their triceps.   This grip will make it more difficult for your opponent to regain their posture.    Childrens martial arts classes like this technique because it’s easy for kids to perform.  With the grip on their arm you are going to drag it across your body toward your right arm till your arm is fully extended and their shoulder is touching your upper torso.  Use your left hand to reach across their back for a grip around their armpit to lock them down in the position.    From this position taking the back is pretty much guaranteed.  Now start to shrimp your butt out leaving one foot hook in between their legs.   Instead of doing what you normally think you will do like jump over to their back from there you are going to get a grip on their pants and drag there hip down to the ground in-between your legs.  Then you can get you other hooks in and go for your favorite attacks from the back.  BJJ Baltimore students like to finish off their opponents with the bow and arrow choke.

Martial Arts-Women’s Fitness Classes

Tuesday, August 16th, 2011

Women who do kickboxing classes in MD aren’t making excuses about being out of shape because they are doing something about it.  Aren’t you ready to get yourself back in shape for your summertime bikini?  After the holiday season we tend to let ourselves go and then get upset when we have to exercise harder to get our body back. It’s time to break the cycle! No more crash diet fads to drop weight instantly.  Enough of the crazed fitness boot camp workouts that have you feeling hurt every day.

It’s time to close your mouth and put in the work need to get the achievements you’ve always wanted.   Everybody has six pack abs on their stomach, it’s just that most people have to get through a layer of fat to see them.  So even if you just do strength training exercises to make your butt and thigh muscles stronger you still will have the fat to deal with. You have to add smarter eating techniques and cardio to your weight training.  You’ll enjoy the results that you’ll get if you do all three.

The hardest one of the three is to implement and stick to the smarter eating techniques.     People eat food less for nutrition and more for how good it tastes. When you are planning your meals try to focus on portion size and frequency. The best thing to do is to eat five meals a day, 3 regular meals and 2 snacks, every 2 to 3 hours so your body always has food in its stomach. Instructors of womens fitness kickboxing classes would recommend that you try to cut out soda as much as possible and stick with juice and water because once you stop drinking soda for awhile it won’t taste as great as it did before.

There are a wide variety of cardio exercises that you can do and you’ll never be bored with it. You can go the more traditional route by running, bicycling, and swimming. However, you’ll get more enjoyment out of trying a new zumba class, muay thai kickboxing class, women’s fitness class, boxing, jumping roping or Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

Old school exercises like deadlift, squats, and lunges will do the trick to strengthen up your glute muscles and get you ready for the summertime. BJJ Baltimore students love these exercises because you can add weight to them. When you incorporate all three: cardio, smart eating, and strength training you’ll be well on your way to reaching that firm booty that you’ve always desired.

MMA-Five Remedies to Get Rid of Bruises

Friday, July 29th, 2011

When you are getting the Best UFC training you are guaranteed to leave the training room with bruises. Bruises are discolored spots on the body that are usually black, blue, or green in coloration.  Blunt trauma to the muscles, or something hitting against your muscle with force is what causes bruises. That trauma allows the blood to go around the muscle tissue and up to the surface.  Bruises often don’t appear immediately after the trauma to the muscle, but can take between 30 minutes to 24 hours to appear on the skin.  Eventually the bruises will heal depending on how bad they are it could take a long time.

When someone who doesn’t train in some form of martial arts sees all the bruises on a martial artist, a million thoughts probably rush into their head about where the bruises must have came from. For female MMA fighters it is especially bad because people will think they need to join a womens self defense classes since they will assume that they’re getting beaten by someone like a husband or boyfriend.  When the truth is they could probably beat them up if they wanted to. For men who train MMA and have professional jobs, bruises is not a good look to have either.  Also, for ladies who want to wear a swim suit, bruises will cause a lot of unwanted attention.  Throughout this article will be 5 unorthodox, but effective ways to reduce to the coloration of a bruise quickly.

The first unorthodox way to get rid of bruises is to bandage a banana peel to bruise and leave it there overnight.   If you repeat this process for a few nights you will notice that the bruises will heal much faster.   The second way is to use Vick’s vapor rub there is an ingredient in the medication that seeps below the skin tissue to alleviate coloration. The third way is to take an aspirin because it will thin the blood.  If you take aspirin make sure you are taking the correct dosage. The fourth way is great for girls; use make-up to cover up the bruises. The fifth unorthodox way to get rid of bruises is to brew herbal tea bags. Then take the tea bags and place in them on your bruise for 25 minutes.  Do that twice a day especially before you go to sleep. Students who do kickboxing classes in MD don’t mind getting bruises because they have these remedies to use.

BJJ-Be a Guard Buster

Wednesday, July 27th, 2011

The Best fighters in Maryland know various closed guard breaking techniques, but the Brazilian jiu-jitsu technique that you will be learning from this article is the Low Guard Break. It’s a great guard break from the ground which takes away the risk of being swept or submitted. You also won’t spend a lot of energy standing up and possibly being brought down just to try to stand up again. It is beneficial to learn effective and low energy techniques. You get locked into your opponent’s closed guard. Before you can begin to escape this position and work for the pass you must have your posture. Posture is crucial whenever you are in your opponent’s closed guard. You will get submitted and swept without good posture.

To begin make sure your knees are shoulder width apart and you are sitting straight up. If your knees are too close together it will be very easy for your opponent to just trap your arms and sweep you. You will end up mounted if you let that happen. In competition you will be down 6 points, 2 for the sweep and 4 for the mount, all because of incorrect posture. Also a little detail to note when you are in your opponent’s closed guard try to stay on your toes instead of the top part of your foot. Women Self Defense Classesstudents love this little detail because being on your toes will put you into the ready-to-go position when are able to open up the guard. It also adds a little stress to your opponent’s legs because they are elevated slightly higher than before. Next you want to make sure your elbows are inside their thighs and your hands are grabbing Gi material at their hip. Now you are going to walk your knees backwards and use your back to create stress on your opponent’s ankles. When the guard is open you immediately place one of your knees in the middle to prevent them for relocking the closed guard. You can pass in any way you like when you are in runner stance. This is a great guard break for the Best fighters in Maryland to learn also.

Kickboxing – Your Heart And You

Sunday, July 24th, 2011

Womens Fitness Kickboxing students have to keep their hearts strong because it is one of the most important parts of the body. The heart is where you feel nervousness, love, strength, courage, sadness, and life. You need your heart to live. We all have hearts, but few understand the heart’s inner workings. If you have a better understanding of how the heart works you can understand your body better. You’ll understand how oxygen affects the heart and how it travels throughout your body.

The heart muscle is divided into the right and left sides and each side is divided again into upper and lower chambers. There are 4 separate chambers in the heart. The upper chamber of the heart is called the atria and the lower chamber of the heart is called the ventricles.Venous blood (blood coming back to the heart through the veins) is received by the heart which then pumps it from the right side to the lungs. The right atrium is the entry way for all the blood from the venous system, which flows to the right ventricle. When the heart muscle contracts, the right ventricle squeezes against the volume of blood that had filled the chamber and sends this blood to the lungs through the pulmonary arteries. When blood is in the lungs it gets fresh oxygen and sends carbon dioxide into the pulmonary capillaries. Womens Fitness Kickboxing students need that freshly oxygenated blood that returns to the left atrium through the pulmonary veins. From the left atrium that blood flows into the left ventricle. The right ventricle and the left ventricle contract simultaneously. Blood inside the left ventricle is pumped through the aorta, the largest artery in the body.

It’s important to understand the importance of how breathing is essential to the heart. Your muscles will fatigue if you hold your breath for too long. Womens Fitness Kickboxing students breathe with every move they make, every punch, and every kick because their muscles need oxygen.

MMA Training – If you Can’t Motivate Yourself No One Can!

Sunday, July 24th, 2011

The best fighters in Maryland know that true inspiration starts from within. That is a saying that is almost forgotten. People now believe that they have to find inspiration elsewhere. As if they cannot motivate themselves to accomplish whatever goals they set out to achieve. Imagine if everyone decided to wait for someone to motivate them, nothing would ever get done. Finding something that motivates you from an out side source is important because its often very hard to do yourself. You can’t rely on someone to be there all the time to give you the right words that will motivate you to move. Sometimes if you wait for someone to inspire you to take action you would have already missed your opportunity or the circumstances might have changed making it unattainable.

Ever need to learn what to do in order to inspire themselves. It will seem difficult at first, but it can be done. You must clearly identify the specific goal you want to attain. The more broad your goals the easier it will be for you to cheat yourself, which is why your goals should be very specific. With a goal that is broad you could easily inspire yourself to do a small part of the broad goal and say that you are finished. It is a lot easier to break your goals into small tasks when you have a specific goal to stay focused on. Women who are trying to lose weight could be given an opportunity to the best workouts for women for weight loss and they won’t do unless someone inspires them.

For some reason it is easier for people to do things for others than it is for themselves. It should actually be in the reverse order. This is the same principle as being on a commercial flight and the attendant tell everyone to place the oxygen mask on first before trying to help anybody else. That is a very true saying when it comes to life lessons as well. If everybody was able to inspire themselves they won’t need the assistance of another person. Then the other person could worry about other things besides being someone’s inspiration all the time. Maryland jujitsu students have to be able to motivate themselves.
