Martial Arts-How to Alleviate Stress Cause by Children

Saturday, July 30th, 2011

Instructors of childrens martial arts classes get a majority of their students from stressed out parents.  What causes you the most stress in your life? Is it your kids? Is it someone else’s kids?  Is it the screaming everyday?  Do you have to tell them the same thing every 2 seconds?  Do you have to take care of them 24 hours a day?  Well, you are not the only one  Having kids can be a huge stress factor in an adult’s life.   Of course you love your children and would never hurt them, but they are really good a pushing all the wrong buttons at once.  When kids have that kind of power that means they are in control of the situation.  You have to get the power back to alleviate stress in your life.

They say you should use patience with your children. That is true to an extent, but sometimes too much patience is a bad thing.  This is where discipline comes into action   The younger your children are when they are exposed to discipline, the younger they will be when they become fully well-behaved.  The older they are the harder it will be to discipline because they have already gotten away with so much that they will not listen to you.  Enlisting in the help of an outside source to help your children learn discipline is not a bad idea. Parents love enrolling their kids into childrens martial arts classes because they have the discipline structure.  In class their child will learn to say ‘yes’ and ‘no ma’am’ and ‘yes and no sir’.  They will learn that the moves they are learning come with great responsibility.  That great responsibility is not to use the moves they learn unless they are in a self defense situation.

Just simply keeping your child or children preoccupied wouldn’t be such a bad idea either! If they are busy, they are less likely to find trouble.  As the saying goes ‘idol hands and the devil’s workshop’ get your child involved in some activities that way you both will have a break from each other.  You can also take a womens fitness kickboxing class to punch and kick away any frustration.

BJJ-Martial Arts Learning Never Stops

Saturday, July 30th, 2011

The best fighters in Maryland know that learning never stops.  This is especially true when it comes to martial arts training.   Whenever you think you have mastered an art there is always something new being invented.   It may frustrate some practitioners because it seems like it doesn’t have an end.  Individuals with that mentality aren’t true to their martial arts studies.  Just because they have a black belt doesn’t mean that they know everything.  They may know less about their art than someone else.

You have to train everyday in Brazilian jiu-jitsu to get better.   It may seem extreme compared to other martial arts.    You have to do this because Brazilian jiujitsu is growing so fast.    All around the world, people who practice Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu are finding ways to make a style of their own.  A good example would be the Mendes Brothers; the popular duo that made the 50/50 position one that is now well known by many people.    It is hated and loved by many.  It is mostly hated by BJJ practitioners that felt like they have learned every position already.   Since a new position had been developed, the jiu-jitsu practitioners had to then learn ways to get out of that position.    They have to learn how to get into the 50/50 position.  Maryland jujitsu students have to learn possible submission set-ups that can be done from that position. That is the beauty of some martial arts.   Just when you think you have learned everything there is to learn you get surprised with something new.  It never gets boring when you are trying to find ways to learn the ends and outs of the various positions.

The best thing about martial arts is that you are also in a position where you can create your own techniques and positions depending on the style that you do.  There are all kinds of different media forms to learn from, there for the learning never ends. Before you could only learn from attending a martial arts school.  Now there is the internet, books, and plenty of videos that can be used.  Maryland BJJ instructors suggest you take advantage of the opportunities to learn everyday.

Difference between Judo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for self defense

Wednesday, March 30th, 2011

There are so many different martial arts schools and self defense classes in Baltimore area that it can be overwhelming when having to pick one to be apart of. It’s even harder to pick a martial art if it has a similar style that it is competing against. Judo and Brazilian jiu-jitsu would be an example of two different martial arts with a similar style. Judo is a very old martial art and has been around much longer then Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.  BJJ being a newer martial art style adopted qualities of some the best styles in the world into one martial art system. Both styles have their advantages and disadvantages when it comes to deciding which one is better to do for self defense.

Judo evolved out of the ancient samurai hand to hand combat system known as jujitsu. Judo is heavily focused on throws and controlling your opponent while on the feet.  Judo is great for defense against stand up attacks. A well times through can knockout your opponent, break limbs, or at the very least knock the wind out of them. That would give the person who was being attacked an opportunity to run away. Martial arts schools and self defense classes in Baltimore would recommend that the person being attack should take the opportunity to follow through with a submission attack after the throw they should do it if it will incapacitate their attacker.

Brazilian jiu-jitsu evolved out of judo and Japanese jujitsu. It is a self defense style that focuses on grappling and fighting on the ground. Self defense classes in Baltimore like this system because it was developed for smaller people to defend themselves using technique and leverage. Knowing Brazilian jiu-jitsu would be beneficial especially if any fight goes to the ground. BJJ will give them the skills to incapacitate the attacker with joint locks or by choking them unconscious.  Although not as heavily focused, BJJ does incorporate Judo and wrestling. With the combination of stand up and ground fighting Brazilian jiu jitsu would be the better choice for self defense.

An Introduction To Aikido

Saturday, December 13th, 2008

There’s no mistaken the fact that Aikido is one of the best and most popular martial art in the United States today.  The art of Aikido is best associated with actor Steven Seagal, who made it even more popular with his movies.  Aikido is rich and history in tradition, an art that originally started in Japan back in the 1940s.

Aikido’s founder, Morihei Ueshiba, was born on December 14, 1883.  As he was growing up in modern Japan, Ueshiba witnessed the local thugs vandalize his father.  The young boy decided that he would make himself strong in order to seek revenge against the thugs.  Ueshiba was strong willed, and devoted every waking moment to physical training and martial arts.

He received a lot of certificates in jujitsu, spear fighting, and fencing.  Even though he was very impressive with his abilities, he found himself not happy with his skills.  He knew that there was more to it, and began to look into religion, hoping that he would find a greater significance with life – pursuing martial arts all the while.

Ueshiba founded the martial art of Aikido by combining both his religious beliefs and his training in martial arts.  At that time, the style was known as aikibudo, it wasn’t until 1942 that he decided to go with the name Aikido.  The style was quite different indeed, incorporating several different styles of jujitsu, aiki-jujitsu, and spear and sword fighting techniques as well.

Even though a lot of us think of Aikido as the ultimate martial art, it is an art that is based on religion and harmony.  Aikido uses joint locks, weight manipulation, and throws to achieve it’s purpose.  The martial art is very effective, which were the intentions of Ueshiba from the start.  Aikido consists of many techniques, and it is the result of Ueshiba’s creative innovation.

Aside from what many think, there really is no unified belief or philosophy in the martial art of Aikido.  While Aikido is indeed rich in heritage and religion, it believes in harmony and peace of the spirit.  By achieving a higher spiritual power, Ueshiba has always believed that the human body is capable of anything.  Even though he wanted revenge, he still stated that Aikido wasn’t about fighting, but rather a way to reconcile with the world and make every human being on giant family.

Over the years, Aikido was introduced in America with amazing results.  Steven Seagal is by far the most popular, showing the world the power and harmony of Aikido through his many movies.  There are a lot of martial arts dojo’s around North America that offer Aikido to study, possibly even some in your area.  Not only will Aikido teach you self defense, but it will also teach you harmony of the spirit and how to find inner peace as well.
