Take Your Self-Defense Training Seriously

People who are thinking about doing self defense classes in Columbia MD should take their self defense training seriously. It would make no sense for someone to pay money to take a class if they are going to goof off and not pay attention. The person is taking a self defense class for a reason, right? It is important to take the class seriously if you want to reach your goals no matter what the reason you started taking the class. At the self defense classes in Columbia so much information is being thrown them and if they start goofing around they might miss a very important detail in a particular technique.

There are so many different types of self defense classes in Columbia MD and they are mostly martial arts. There are some martial arts like karate, taekwondo, and kung fu that don’t require a large attention span and the moves are pretty easy to remember.  That is usually where the mistake of not taking the class seriously is made by students of those self defense classes. The moves are so repetitive and easy to learn that a person can get bored quickly. Boredom can lead to a student spacing out, not paying attention and goofing off. Once the instructor loses the attention of the students and they start socializing the classroom environment will not be suitable for learning. If the student is having trouble focusing it is important for them to remember why they started taking the class and that these techniques may protect them in the future. If the instructing is just not good then it might be time to consider a new self defense class to try.

Brazilian jiu-jitsu and judo is a good example of a self defense classes in Columbia MD that the training needs to be taken seriously.  There is so many details that the instructor goes over for one move. When it comes to defending yourself paying attention can mean the difference between escaping an attack and a trip to the emergency room, or worse.

Difference between Judo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for self defense

There are so many different martial arts schools and self defense classes in Baltimore area that it can be overwhelming when having to pick one to be apart of. It’s even harder to pick a martial art if it has a similar style that it is competing against. Judo and Brazilian jiu-jitsu would be an example of two different martial arts with a similar style. Judo is a very old martial art and has been around much longer then Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.  BJJ being a newer martial art style adopted qualities of some the best styles in the world into one martial art system. Both styles have their advantages and disadvantages when it comes to deciding which one is better to do for self defense.  

 Judo evolved out of the ancient samurai hand to hand combat system known as jujitsu. Judo is heavily focused on throws and controlling your opponent while on the feet.  Judo is great for defense against stand up attacks. A well times through can knockout your opponent, break limbs, or at the very least knock the wind out of them. That would give the person who was being attacked an opportunity to run away. Martial arts schools and self defense classes in Baltimore would recommend that the person being attack should take the opportunity to follow through with a submission attack after the throw they should do it if it will incapacitate their attacker.  

Brazilian jiu-jitsu evolved out of judo and Japanese jujitsu. It is a self defense style that focuses on grappling and fighting on the ground. Self defense classes in Baltimore like this system because it was developed for smaller people to defend themselves using technique and leverage. Knowing Brazilian jiu-jitsu would be beneficial especially if any fight goes to the ground. BJJ will give them the skills to incapacitate the attacker with joint locks or by choking them unconscious.  Although not as heavily focused, BJJ does incorporate Judo and wrestling. With the combination of stand up and ground fighting Brazilian jiu jitsu would be the better choice for self defense.

The Basics Of Judo

The martial art style Judo can mean a lot of things to different people.  In reality, it is a fun and exciting sport, an art, a discipline, an activity, a way to protect yourself, and quite simply a way of life.  Although you may hear many different meanings, the word Judo actually means all of the above and several more.

Original founded back in 1882, Judo comes from the feudal Japan fighting system.  Upon founding, Judo was a refinement of the martial art jujutsu.  Jujutsu is one of the oldest martial arts styles, dating back hundreds of years.

Judo made the biggest impact in 1964 when it was first introduced into the Olympic Games.  Now, it is practiced by millions of people all across the world.  Judo can help students stay in shape, excel in all areas of competition, stay protected with self defense, and several other things.  For a majority of students, Judo is practiced just for fun.  Although it starts out as fun for many, it quickly turns into a way of life, a burning passion if you will.

Similar to other martial arts styles, Judo has rules that ensure the safety of those competing in the competitions.      Students of Judo who are looking to test their skills will enjoy the competition levels, which range from club meets to national tournaments, and on up to the well known and best level of competition – the Olympic Games.

Judo is known best for it’s amazing throw techniques.  What many aren’t aware of, is the fact that Judo is more than just throws.  It also involves grappling on the ground, controlling holds, arm locks, leg locks, and even choking techniques.  Judo teaches all aspects of self defense, from a grappler’s standpoint.

Another great thing about Judo is the fact that anyone can study, male or female, and even those that are disabled.  Judo is also inexpensive to participate in, taught throughout the year, and it appeals to everyone.  This martial art is also unique in the sense that even the elderly enjoy practicing it on a daily basis.

Judo also helps students learn and develop respect and self discipline.  It offers the chance to learn self confidence, leadership skills, power, flexibility, and physical prowess.  Judo has evolved quite a bit over the years, going from a fighting art to competition status.  These days, there are separate Judo ranks for kids, adults, and seniors.

The martial art Judo, which means “gentle way” teaches you the applications that you need for self defense as well as competition.  Judo is unlike other martial arts, in the sense that it combines the best of grappling with awesome throws that require little to no strength – but more of the way you position your body.  This is an excellent martial art – that anyone can enjoy.
